What to know before your visit ↓
Toothache, swelling or a broken tooth: when to call
Call promptly for severe or worsening tooth pain, swelling, a suspected infection, or a damaged tooth. Tell us about fever, a bad taste, pain when biting or a recent injury.
A suspected abscess needs dental treatment. Pain medicine may ease symptoms temporarily, but it does not repair a tooth or treat the source of an infection. See our dental abscess treatment and broken or chipped tooth care pages.
Some symptoms need hospital care now. Call 911 or go to an emergency department if swelling makes breathing, swallowing or speaking difficult, or affects your eye or vision. Do not wait for a dental appointment.
Does Health First Colorado cover emergency dental care?
Health First Colorado includes dental benefits, and medically necessary emergency treatment may be covered. Medicaid acceptance does not guarantee coverage for every procedure. Your benefits must be active, and the diagnosis, treatment and current program rules matter.
We explain recommended care and check applicable benefits. Some treatment needs prior authorization or supporting records. Ask about your options before agreeing to a non-covered service. Our Medicaid dentist page explains the appointment process.
What if you already used your adult dental benefit limit?
Starting July 1, 2026, Health First Colorado adult dental benefits have a $3,000 limit for each July 1–June 30 benefit year. DentaQuest’s current notice says emergency treatment and dentures are not subject to that limit.
Not every urgent visit or extraction automatically qualifies for the emergency exception. The dentist must assess the condition, and coverage rules still apply. Used your limit? Call so we can check your options. For detailed benefit information, visit the Colorado Medicaid dental benefits guide.
What happens at your emergency dental appointment?
- We assess the problem. Tell us when symptoms began and about your medicines, allergies and health conditions. The dentist examines the area and takes X-rays when needed.
- We explain your choices. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may involve a filling, repairing a damaged tooth, root canal treatment, drainage or tooth extraction. A painful tooth does not always need removal.
- We plan treatment and follow-up. The first visit may involve treatment or an initial step to address the problem. What can be completed that day depends on the findings, treatment required and appointment availability.
Antibiotics are not necessary for every toothache and are not a substitute for treating the source. The dentist decides whether they are appropriate based on your symptoms and examination.
Call first: help us prepare for your visit
Call 303-222-1414 first. Tell us:
- Whether the appointment is for an adult or child.
- What hurts, when it started and whether there is swelling or an injury.
- That you have Health First Colorado, and your member information if available.
- When you can arrive and whether you need help in Spanish.
Bring member information, a medication list and recent dental records. See our new-patient page. An online request is not a confirmed appointment; the office must confirm your time.
