A clean break or a detached denture tooth can sometimes be repaired, but a repeatedly broken, badly worn or poorly fitting denture may need replacement. The right choice depends on the appliance, the mouth beneath it and why the damage occurred.
Problems that may be repairable
- A denture tooth has come out and the base remains intact.
- The acrylic base has a clean fracture and the pieces fit together.
- A small area needs professional adjustment.
- The denture is otherwise in good condition but needs a reline because supporting tissues have changed.
A repair should restore strength, fit and function—not simply make the pieces look connected. Star Dental’s on-site denture technician examines the break and coordinates with the dentist when the mouth or bite also needs evaluation.
Signs replacement may be the better choice
| Finding | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Repeated fractures | The bite, fit or material may be placing the same area under excessive stress. |
| Severely worn teeth | Wear can reduce chewing efficiency and change facial support or the bite. |
| Major fit changes | Bone and gum tissues change over time; an unstable denture can rub and move. |
| Multiple previous repairs | Added material and old damage can make another repair less predictable. |
| Unrepairable or missing appliance | A new impression and replacement process may be required. |
What happens at a denture evaluation?
Bring the denture and every broken piece. The team checks the base, teeth, fit, bite and condition of the gums. The dentist may examine for sore spots, infection, remaining tooth problems or tissue changes. If repair is reasonable, the technician explains the process. If replacement is recommended, new impressions and try-in appointments help plan fit and appearance.
What not to do with a broken denture
- Do not use superglue, nail products or household repair kits.
- Do not bend clasps or metal components.
- Do not continue chewing with a sharp, unstable or cracked appliance.
- Do not throw away loose teeth or fragments.
- Do not assume pain is only a denture problem; the gum or remaining teeth may need care.
Store the pieces in a clean container and call the office. If a sharp area is injuring the mouth, leave the denture out until you receive instructions.
Repair, reline and replacement are different
Repair fixes damage to the appliance. Reline renews the tissue-facing surface to improve adaptation to the gums. Replacement creates a new denture based on current anatomy and bite. A chairside or lab evaluation determines which option addresses the actual cause.
Common questions
How fast can a denture be repaired?
Turnaround depends on the damage, material, required parts and whether the fit must also be corrected. Call with a description and bring all pieces for an accurate estimate.
Can a cracked denture be worn temporarily?
Continuing to wear it can worsen the break or injure tissue. Stop if it is sharp, loose or painful and call the office.
Will insurance pay for repair or replacement?
Coverage varies. Health First Colorado and PPO plans have different rules, frequency limits and authorization requirements. Star Dental can help verify available information before treatment.
