New dentures require practice and follow-up. Mild fullness, extra saliva, speech changes and small pressure areas are common during adaptation, but persistent pain, sores or a denture that will not stay in place should be evaluated rather than endured.
What can feel normal at first?
The cheeks, tongue and lips are learning to coordinate around a new shape. The denture may feel larger than expected, and saliva production can temporarily increase. Speech may sound different. These sensations generally improve with practice, but the appliance should not cause ongoing wounds or severe pain.
How to eat with new dentures
- Begin with soft foods in small pieces. Eggs, yogurt, cooked vegetables, fish and tender foods are easier to control.
- Chew slowly on both sides. Balanced pressure helps reduce rocking.
- Add firmer foods gradually. Cut food rather than biting with the front teeth when possible during early adaptation.
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods at first. Nuts, hard candy, popcorn kernels and sticky candy can destabilize or damage an appliance.
- Be cautious with temperature. Denture acrylic can reduce temperature sensation, so test hot foods carefully.
Tips for clearer speech
Read aloud slowly, repeat words that are difficult and give the tongue time to find new contact points. If the denture clicks, drops or shifts during normal speech after an initial practice period, an adjustment may help.
Daily denture and mouth care
- Rinse the denture after meals when practical.
- Brush it daily with a denture brush or soft brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Ordinary toothpaste can scratch acrylic.
- Clean over a folded towel or sink of water to reduce breakage if it is dropped.
- Brush the gums, tongue and roof of the mouth gently with a soft brush.
- Remove the denture for the period recommended by your dentist, commonly overnight, to rest the tissues.
- Keep most dentures moist when out of the mouth, using the method recommended for the appliance. Rinse thoroughly before reinserting.
Do not use bleach, boiling water, abrasive household cleaners or products not intended for the denture material. Metal components may require special care.
What to do about sore spots
A small pressure area may need a precise adjustment. Call rather than grinding or filing the denture yourself. Unless the office gives different instructions, wear the denture for a few hours before an adjustment appointment so the clinician can locate the pressure point. Remove it sooner if pain is severe or the tissue is being cut.
Changes in fit over months or years can result from normal remodeling of gum and bone. A reline or replacement may be considered when an appliance becomes loose. Adhesive should not be used to hide a major fit problem.
When to call the dentist
Call for persistent sores, bleeding, swelling, white or red patches, bad odor that does not improve with cleaning, a cracked base, loose teeth, a sudden bite change or difficulty chewing. Regular dental visits remain important even when no natural teeth remain because the mouth, tissues and fit still need examination.

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?
Adaptation varies. Many sensations improve over several weeks, but fit problems should be assessed earlier rather than waiting through persistent pain.
Should I sleep in my dentures?
Most patients should remove them for a daily rest period, often overnight, unless the dentist provides temporary postoperative instructions that differ.
Can I use denture adhesive?
Adhesive may improve confidence for a well-fitting denture when used as directed. It should not compensate for an appliance that is damaged or substantially loose.
