When another opinion can help
A second opinion can be useful when you are considering removing teeth, starting a large treatment plan, replacing an old denture or choosing between tooth-saving treatment and extraction. It can also help when you understand the proposed procedure but remain unsure why it is recommended.
Make the question specific. “Do I need this crown?” is a start; “What finding makes a filling unsuitable, and what alternatives do I have?” gives the discussion more direction. If you have several recommendations, identify the decisions that matter most to you so the appointment can focus on them.
Records that make the visit more useful
- The written treatment plan, including tooth numbers if listed.
- Recent dental images and reports, or your previous office’s contact details.
- A list of procedures already completed, temporary restorations and current symptoms.
- Your medicines, medical conditions, allergies and relevant dental history.
- Your main concerns about cost, timing, comfort or keeping particular teeth.
You do not need to interpret the X-rays yourself. Tell the team what records exist and ask how to arrange transfer. Star can request them, but records must be useful for the clinical question. What an independent assessment means
We review your concern and examine the relevant teeth and tissues. Existing records provide context; they do not replace making our own diagnosis. At Star, X-rays and intraoral photos can help us show the finding and explain the proposed care.
Ask the dentist to separate observations from recommendations. For example: What is damaged? Is the tooth restorable? What would each option involve? What information is still needed? The answer may be agreement with the original plan, a different option, further assessment or a specialist opinion. A second opinion is useful even when it confirms the first recommendation, because you understand the reasoning better.

If treatment has already started
Tell us about temporary fillings or crowns, unfinished root canal treatment, recent extractions and any upcoming appointments. Bring the treating dentist’s instructions. A new assessment should account for work already in progress and the follow-up it needs.
Call promptly if you have new pain or swelling rather than waiting for a routine second-opinion appointment. If you develop trouble breathing or swallowing or severe spreading swelling, seek emergency medical help. Otherwise, explain the symptoms when you contact the dental office so the team can plan an appropriate visit.

Does a different opinion mean my previous dentist was wrong?
Not necessarily. Plans can differ because of findings, available information, patient goals and treatment approaches. Ask each dentist to explain the basis of the recommendation.
