Dental Membership vs. Insurance
A dental membership, dental insurance and a financing plan solve different problems. A membership usually provides specified services or discounts through a participating office; insurance pays benefits under a policy; financing lets an approved borrower repay a purchase over time. Star Dental’s published payment options include self-pay, insurance and CareCredit. This guide does not advertise a Star membership plan.

Compare the agreement, not just the monthly amount
Two plans with similar monthly costs can cover very different things. Before enrolling anywhere, list the treatment you expect, who can provide it and what you will pay beyond the plan fee. Ask for written details so you can compare the same services.
A plan that suits routine examinations may be less useful for a denture, extraction or root canal. The decision starts with your needs and a diagnosis, not a promise that one arrangement is best for everyone.
Three different payment models
| Model | Main purpose | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Office membership or discount plan | Included services or reduced fees under its written terms | Which clinic, procedures, exclusions and renewal conditions apply? |
| Dental insurance | Benefits for eligible services under a policy | Which network, waiting periods, limits and patient costs apply? |
| Financing | Repayment of an eligible purchase | What approval, interest, payment schedule and total repayment apply? |
An office membership is not automatically insurance. Financing does not make the treatment less expensive by itself. A discount percentage is meaningful only when you know the underlying fee and which parts of the treatment qualify.
Questions to ask about a membership offered elsewhere
- What services are included in the fee, and how often?
- Does the discount apply to laboratory work, sedation and specialist treatment?
- Can it be used with insurance or another offer?
- Must all care be completed at the issuing office?
- What happens if you move, cancel or do not use included appointments?
- Does it renew automatically, and can the terms change?
The American Dental Association’s overview of in-office plans explains that these arrangements depend on the plan’s terms. Treat the actual agreement as the source for a particular offer.
Questions to ask about insurance
Review the network rules, exclusions, frequency limits, deductible, benefit maximum and any waiting period relevant to your planned care. Ask whether an estimate is based on confirmed benefits or an assumption. A policy summary may not answer every question about a particular procedure.
If you already have insurance, bring the information to your appointment so the office can discuss it. Buying a new policy shortly before a known treatment does not establish that the procedure will be covered immediately.
Your options at Star Dental
Star welcomes patients without insurance and accepts Health First Colorado. The team can explain the visit and estimated patient portion before you decide on treatment. Payment options include major credit and debit cards, cash, Zelle and CareCredit for approved applicants.
Some services may require a deposit, and the estimated patient portion is due at the end of each appointment. See our payment options guide for those details. If cost is limiting a larger plan, ask whether clinically appropriate staged treatment is possible.
Make a comparison using the same treatment
Write the complete expected treatment on one line, the plan’s fee on another and the remaining patient costs below. Include items that are excluded or provided outside the network. Compare a full year or the actual planned course of care rather than one monthly charge in isolation.
Our estimate comparison guide helps separate diagnosis, treatment, replacement teeth and follow-up. If you are uncertain whether the recommended treatment is right for you, a second opinion addresses that clinical question before you commit to a payment arrangement.
Frequently asked questions
Does Star advertise its own membership plan?
This page is an educational comparison, not an offer of a Star membership. The office’s published options are described in its insurance and payment guide.
Is a membership the same as insurance?
No. Check the written terms to understand which services or discounts are included and where they can be used.
Is CareCredit a discount program?
It is financing for approved applicants. The applicable credit agreement determines repayment and interest terms; it does not replace a treatment estimate.
Can I visit Star without any plan?
Yes. Uninsured patients are welcome. Ask about the examination charge, treatment estimate and payment timing when you arrange the visit.
