The right treatment depends on the cause of the problem. We begin with an examination and the appropriate digital X-rays so the dentist can explain your options.

Severe Toothache

Constant, sharp or throbbing pain may come from decay, a damaged nerve, infection, a cracked tooth or another condition that needs diagnosis.

Abscess, Infection or Swelling

Painful swelling, pus, fever, a bad taste or facial tenderness can signal an infection. A dental abscess needs urgent professional care and will not resolve on its own.

Broken, Chipped or Cracked Tooth

Prompt care can protect the tooth, smooth sharp edges, address exposed inner tooth structure and reduce the risk of further damage.

Knocked-Out or Loose Permanent Tooth

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Call first whenever possible. These practical steps may help protect the area while you travel to the office.

Call and Explain What Happened

Tell us where it hurts, when it started, whether you have swelling or fever, and whether the problem followed an injury.

For a Toothache

Rinse gently with warm water and floss carefully if food may be caught between teeth. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.

For a Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it cannot be placed gently back in position, keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation product and come in immediately. Do not reinsert a baby tooth.

For Swelling or a Broken Tooth

Rinse gently and place a cold compress on the outside of the face. Save any tooth fragments and bring them with you. Do not apply household glue to a tooth or crown.

For Bleeding

Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding will not stop, or the injury is severe, go to the nearest emergency room.

Important: Trouble breathing or swallowing, serious facial or jaw trauma, rapidly spreading swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency medical care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Treatment Depends on the Diagnosis

Emergency dentistry is not one procedure. After evaluating the tooth and surrounding tissues, the dentist may recommend treatment to stop pain, control infection, repair damage or remove a tooth that cannot be predictably restored.

Possible care may include a filling or crown repair, root canal treatment, treatment of an abscess, extraction, stabilization of an injured tooth, or a temporary measure followed by definitive treatment.

Painful tooth: Identify whether the cause is decay, infection, fracture, gum disease or another condition.
Swelling or abscess: Address the source of infection and determine whether drainage, dental treatment or medication is appropriate.
Broken restoration or tooth: Protect the tooth and determine whether it can be repaired or needs a different treatment.
Injury: Evaluate the tooth, bite, gums and jaw and refer for hospital care when the injury is beyond the scope of a dental office.

Do I need an emergency dentist or the hospital emergency room?

Call a dentist promptly for severe tooth pain, an abscess, localized swelling, a broken tooth, a lost restoration or another urgent dental problem. Call 911 or go to an emergency room for trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, serious facial or jaw trauma, or swelling that may affect your airway or eye.

Do you accept same-day emergency appointments?

Same-day appointments may be available. Call 303-222-1414 as early as possible and tell us about your symptoms so we can reserve appropriate time.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Yes, walk-ins are accepted. Calling ahead is still recommended because emergency visits vary in complexity and we want to allow enough time for examination, X-rays and treatment.

Are you open for dental emergencies on Saturday and Sunday?

Star Dental is open seven days a week, including Saturday and Sunday. Call for current availability. We do not claim to provide 24-hour clinical treatment.

Do you accept new emergency patients?

Yes. New patients are welcome. Bring a photo ID and insurance information if available; new-patient forms are completed at the office.

Do you accept Medicaid for emergency dental care?

Star Dental accepts Health First Colorado Medicaid. Coverage depends on active eligibility, the diagnosis and applicable program requirements. If you do not know your Medicaid number, our team can often help look it up.

Do you accept other dental insurance?

We accept most PPO plans, including plans from Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife and Guardian. Benefits and patient responsibility are confirmed individually.

Will antibiotics cure a dental abscess?

An abscess needs urgent dental evaluation because the source of infection usually requires dental treatment. Medication may be appropriate in some situations, but it does not replace diagnosis and definitive care.

Can a knocked-out permanent tooth be saved?

Sometimes, especially when treatment begins quickly. Handle the tooth by the crown, keep it moist and call immediately. Do not scrub the root, and do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.

Will I receive treatment during the first emergency visit?

When appropriate and time allows, treatment may begin at the emergency visit. The exact plan depends on the diagnosis, your health, treatment complexity and informed consent. Some cases require follow-up treatment or referral.
